The load that does not need to move

A five-litre bottle of ready-to-use cleaner is largely water with a small amount of active chemistry. The water is identical to what comes out of the tap at the site where the product is used, but it still gets manufactured into the container, palletised, freighted, handled, stored and eventually disposed of as packaging.

Shipping the concentrate instead moves the same cleaning power without the water. One 6 g sachet makes 750 mL of working solution once water is added at the point of use, which is where the >99% reduction in transported weight comes from.

What changes downstream

Pallet counts drop for the same volume of cleaning delivered
Storeroom footprint shrinks from a wall of drums to cartons on a shelf
Single-use plastic is replaced by reusable bottles refilled on site
Handling risk falls with the weight being carried

The takeaway

Freight, storage and packaging are usually treated as fixed costs of cleaning. They are not. They are a consequence of transporting water, and that decision can be reversed without changing the cleaning outcome.
